HAKAMA SAKI (A Hakama Pair Becomes Two)
A new groom has come early to his bride’s home for the formal “first visit with the father-in-law.” The father-in-law is not ready and doesn’t have a hakama (trousers worn over a kimono), so he borrows the pair worn by Tarokaja, his servant. During formalities the father and Taro must take turns wearing the hakama when attending to the son-in-law, but then they are told to appear together. One hakama, two men. Watch how they try to get out of this predicament.
TAKEBUN (The Warrior Hatano Takebun)
While Lady-consort Ichinomiya sojourns on the shore of Daimotsu-no-ura (Amagasaki city, Hyogo pref.), Matsura, an enemy warrior, looks for a chance to kidnap her, but Hatano Takebun, the lady’s escort, guards her closely. Matsura plots a break-in with the innkeeper and sets the inn on fire at night. Takebun escapes and unwittingly leaves Ichinomiya under the protection of his foe, who sets sail with his prize. Realizing he’s been tricked, Takebun chases the abductors in a small boat but cannot catch up. In desperation, Takebun drowns himself, hoping to become a demon so he can stop Matsura’s ship. Now a vengeful spirit, Takebun attacks and the enemy tries to appease the demon by throwing the robe of Lady Ichinomiya into the sea. Takebun grabs and pulls the robe, dragging Matsura into the water and the two disappear beneath the waves.
