SU HAJIKAMI (Vinegar and Ginger)
Two merchants, one selling vinegar and the other vending ginger, meet on the road. They start arguing about who has the higher status, attempting to outdo each other by using witty verse and making puns that allude to their merchandise.
HACHI NO KI (The Potted Trees)
During a snowstorm one night, Sano Tsuneyo puts up Hojo Tokiyori, disguised as a traveling priest, welcoming him by using a treasured potted tree (bonsai) as firewood. Later, when Tsuneyo is summoned to Kamakura, he arrives looking very suitably dressed despite his poverty and discovers the true identity of the priest. This dramatic work depicts the virtue of proud men.
