NAKI AMA (The Crying Nun)

Lacking confidence in his sermon, a priest promises to give Naki Ama (the Crying Nun) half of the offering to embellish the sermon by crying. However, the nun begins to doze off at the crucial point...

MATSURA SAYOHIME (Princess Sayo of Matsura)

Princess Sayo waves her scarf to see off Sadehiko, who is setting off for China as a Japanese envoy to the Tang Dynasty. This Noh play recreates the spirit of Princess Sayo, who appeared before a traveling monk, drowning herself in a frenzy while holding a keepsake mirror to her chest. This revived play, based on an autographic manuscript by Zeami, was added to the current list of Noh plays in 2000.
