TOKORO (The Mountain Potato)
The spirit of a tokoro yam confronts a monk on the road and recounts how he was dug up and cooked. It is a maikyogen (dance kyogen) performed the structure of Noh drama.
AYA NO TSUZUMI (The Damask Drum)
An old garden sweeper falls in love with one of the emperor’s consorts. The lady tells him that if he can beat a drum and make a sound, she will meet him. But the drum’s head is stretched with fine twill, so no matter how hard the poor man beats it, there is no sound. Resenting the lady’s cruelty, the man drowns himself and then returns as an angry spirit with vengeance.
