HACHIKU RENGA (A Debt Paid with a Poem)

Two men, one in debt to the other, engage in a renga (linked verse) contest, playing on “pay up” and “can’t pay.” In whose hands will the “debt certificate” fall?

KOI NO OMONI (The Heavy Burden of Love)

An old gardener, caring for the emperor’s chrysanthemums, falls in love with the consort. Learning of this, the lady whimsically orders the man to carry a package around the garden and if he does, she will come out so he can see her. Though he tries, the package is so heavy that the man finally curses her and dies of exhaustion. Later, he appears as an angry spirit.
