Mai has been nurtured and passed down in the zashiki (tatami rooms) of Kyoto and Osaka.
Its distinctive feature is the restrained movement within the limited space of a single tatami mat, delicately expressing the subtleties of human emotions and a variety of scenes.
Many schools of Mai evolved in close connection with Noh, one of the Japanese traditional performing arts.
"Talk and Demonstration: Physicality in Mai and Noh ", to be held on November 16, audiences will have the opportunity to enjoy "Kanawa (The Iron Crown) " presented in both Kamigata-mai and Shimai. Through a talk session with the performers, we will explore the distinctive qualities of physical expression in Mai and Noh, while highlighting the unique appeal of Mai.
At "Mai no kai: Japanese classical chamber dance of the Kyoto-Osaka Region ", to be held on November 17, we will present works associated with Noh to mark staging of Mai no kai at the National Noh Theatre. As you reflect on the relationship between Mai and Noh, we invite you to enjoy the richly poetic world of Mai.
