Musical Gems that Enriched the Showa Era
In 1926, Japan entered a new era known as Showa. This year marks the centennial of its beginning.
To commemorate this milestone, we present five works rich in variety and expression, each inspired by a significant Showa era development in the world of traditional Japanese music.
These five moments include: the incorporation of modern elements encouraged by the rise of radio broadcasting; the establishment of the Department of Traditional Japanese Music at Tokyo University of the Arts; the launch of the Recording Division of the Agency for Cultural Affairs’ National Arts Festival; the shakuhachi boom sparked by cross-school collaborations; and new movements that emerged toward the end of the Showa period.
From classical musical sensibilities to fresh, contemporary sounds, please enjoy performances by leading musicians at the forefront of today’s traditional Japanese music scene.
