For our summer Hogaku performance, the National Theatre, Tokyo presents Discover HOGAKU: The Charm of the “KOTO” ― an introductory performance enjoyable even for those with little knowledge of Hogaku as well as for children first experiencing it. Hogaku is associated with various elements of the Japanese performing arts such as the koto, shamisen, shakuhachi, biwa, as well as vocals and narratives. Today, we will introduce you to the charms of Hogaku by focusing on the koto, a Japanese zither-style instrument with 13 strings.
To start, we will present an easy-to-understand commentary describing the various styles of koto in the two programs presented today. The first, “Natsunokyoku (Song of Summer),” features elegant, calm classical koto music. The next, “Three paraphrases,” is a modern Hogaku masterpiece in which a traditional style of koto music is sublimated into a modern motif. You are sure to appreciate the colorful tones that will be produced by the koto!
We invite you into the world of the koto along with our special guests, HIHARA Yōko and HIRATA Noriko, talented koto musicians actively engaged in playing both classical and modern pieces, who will offer their commentary and performances, and also SUZUKI Fuku, an actor from a family deeply involved in Hogaku, who also will provide guidance on this wonderful traditional Japanese performing art. We look forward to welcoming you to this National Theatre, Tokyo event!
