Since ancient times, humans have viewed animals with a warm heart and animal behavior has been featured through the years in a variety of art forms. From among the many NIHONBUYO pieces depicting animals, this performance represents four different types. This is a wonderful opportunity to get to know the traditional Japanese dance known as NIHONBUYO, even for those with little knowledge about it. Please don’t miss it!
Kiyomoto: Tobae
With sleepy eyes, Masuroku steps into the kitchen to try and catch a rat. To his surprise, however, the wooden pestle in his hand changes into a bird and flies away. What’s more, the cornered rat snuggles up to Masuroku, declaring its love for him. This is a humorous dance piece based on tobae cartoons featuring caricatures of animals and humans that became a popular art form during 18th century.
Nagauta: Tsurigitsune
An old fox whose family was trapped by a hunter assumes the shape of a monk to persuade the hunter into getting rid of the traps. Having achieved his purpose, the fox feels relieved and happy. On his way back, however, the fox, who succumbed to the temptation of the bait put out again by the hunter, becomes entrapped. The most moving element is the pathetic appearance of the old fox who is torn between his reason and instinct.
Nagauta: Sagamiama
This piece depicts a female diver gathering seashells on a seashore with a commanding view of Enoshima, a small island in Sagami Bay. With the names of the shells recited in the lyrics, this dance represents the innocent love of the female diver. In this performance, the female diver also performs a full of loveliness dance with a flathead fish called a kochi.
Kiyomoto: Wazakurabe
A fox in the form of a village girl and a raccoon dog disguised as a jizō (stone statue) recognize each other in disguise and engage in a transformation competition. What will be the outcome of the competition…? This fun piece is performed in a Suodori (dance without adornment) style. You are sure to enjoy the way two such different kinds of animals – yet both known for being able to deceive humans – comically compete with each other over their skills!
