The Tale of Genji in traditional music

- The life of Hikaru Genji traced through Performance and Reading -

“The Tale of Genji” is recognized as one of the best dynastic-style literature masterpieces written in the Heian Period (from the 8th to the 12th centuries), and it also is known as the world’s oldest long-form novel. Centering around Hikaru Genji – the hero of the tale endowed with an unrivaled fine figure, as well as intelligence and a flair for poetry and music – and his offspring, the complex patterns of their relationships are depicted throughout the 54 chapters of the story. This novel still captivates readers as a highly important masterpiece in the history of literature and it also provides a glimpse into the aristocratic society of the Heian Period.
This program traces the life of Hikaru Genji through musical performances in the style of Gagaku, Shōmyō and Sōkyoku, accompanied by recitation narratives.
This is a rare opportunity to experience the gorgeous and luxurious world of “The Tale of Genji” through a variety of Japanese artistic genres. We look forward to your joining us!
