National Theatre (Small Theatre)
Folk Performing Arts Connecting to the Future

To date, the National Theatre has presented a variety of performing arts from all over the country through its Japanese Folk Performances series, which culminates in this final performance here in the original National Theatre. We invite you to please enjoy these impressive and meaningful performing arts pieces full of hope while looking forward to a bright future. From among the Japanese folk performing arts, this program casts a spotlight on those based on tradition, passed down from generation to generation, while still looking to the future. Today, the National Theatre presents three representatives of the folk performing arts: Urahama Nenbutsu Kenbai, which has continued to be active to encourage those in the community even after being affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake; Chakkirako, which is important in that it is to be passed down through the generations by young female performers; and Geihoku Kagura, which is a so-named shinmai (new dance) representing kagura with novel techniques and staging that befit the present day.
