Kumiodori and Ryukyuan Dance– Supreme Performing Arts by Master-hands –

As part of the National Theatre Farewell Special Performances, the final Ryukyuan Performance at the original Theatre will feature Ryukyuan Dance and Kumiodori – both representative of the Okinawan traditional performing arts.

Kumiodori is a musical and theatrical performance consisting of four elements: lyrics, music, movement and dance. It was created by Tamagusuku Chōkun (1684-1734), who was appointed as an Odoribugyō (a dance magistrate; a post mainly responsible for organizing entertaining events) by the administration of the Ryukyu Kingdom to entertain Chinese envoys called Sakuhōshi, sent by the Chinese Emperor to attend the coronation of the new king. Referred to as “Chōkun no Goban (Chōkun’s Five Pieces),” the five pieces created by Chōkun boast a high degree of perfection worthy of the saying: “Kumiodori begins with Chōkun and ends with Chōkun,” and are thus highly regarded as the representative works of Kumiodori. This performance features Onnamonogurui and Nidō Tekiuchi from among the “Chokun no Goban.” We invite you to enjoy these two pieces that vary in taste.

The form of Ryukyuan Dance is basically categorized into “Traditional Dance,” “Zō Odori” and “Creative Dance.” This performance will spotlight Traditional Dance, as established and refined by Odoribugyō like Kumiodori, and Zō Orodi (popular dance), which was established as a style different from Traditional Dance after the abolition of feudal domains and the establishment of prefectures in 1879 through the adoption of folk songs and conventions popular among the common people.

The cast for today’s performances, both tachikata (dancers) and jiutai (musicians), boasts an array of prominent Japanese performers, including several Living National Treasures. You will not want to miss this impressive National Theatre event featuring today’s greatest dancers and singers of the genre!
