Experience "Kanadehon Chūshingura," a legendary masterpiece of Kabuki. This September, "Act Nine," a rarely performed yet highly acclaimed scene from the eleven-act masterpiece, will be presented alongside "Act Two," which provides the narrative premise. Together, these acts constitute a compelling drama centered on two families. As part of the "Introduction to Kabuki Masterpieces" series, this celebrated work will be presented with accessible commentary. Discover a compelling human drama as characters involved in a vendetta struggle between samurai loyalty and deep family bonds.
Act Two: "Momonoi Yakata Rikiya Shisha (The Scene of the Messenger Rikiya at Momonoi's Mansion)," and "Momonoi Yakata Matsu-kiri (The Pine Cutting Scene at Momonoi's Mansion)" Ōboshi Rikiya, the son of Ōboshi Yuranosuke, arrives at Momonoi Wakasanosuke's mansion as an emissary from En’ya Hangan. Rikiya is engaged to Konami, the daughter of Kakogawa Honzō, the chief retainer of the Momonoi family. Konami happily accepts the responsibility of receiving Rikiya's message. After merely delivering Hangan's message to Wakasanosuke, Rikiya leaves. Konami reluctantly watches him go. Wakasanosuke summons Honzō. Humiliated by his mentor, Kō no Moronō, Wakasanosuke reveals to Honzō his plan to kill Moronō. To show his lord's resolve, Honzō cuts a pine branch in the garden. Then, Honzō takes some action to save his lord.
Act Nine: "Yamashina Kankyo (The Scene of the Yamashina Retreat)" Honzō's wife, Tonase, accompanies their daughter, Konami, to visit the secluded home of Ōboshi Yuranosuke, who was the chief retainer of En’ya Hangan, in Yamashina. Tonase requests a wedding ceremony for Konami and Rikiya. However, Yuranosuke's wife, Oishi, refuses, citing Honzō's bribe to Moronō. In despair, Tonase prepares to kill herself with Konami. At that moment, Honzō appears dressed as a komusō monk. He regrets that his actions led to the death of Hangan and deliberately let Rikiya kill him. For a while, Oishi's refusal is actually out of concern for Konami's future. Yuranosuke sees through Honzō's true intentions. In reality, Honzō wishes to cooperate with them and see his daughter married. So, Yuranosuke reveals his desire to complete the vendetta for his late lord to Honzō. Honzō dies lamenting the fate of the two families, praying for the vendetta to be fulfilled.
