Danshichi Kurobē, a fishmonger in Sakai, Osaka, has been put behind bars on charges of inflicting injury, but now he is allowed to leave prison by the mercy of a warrior named Tamashima Hyōdayū. Greeted by his wife Okaji and his acquaintance, the old professional gambler Sabu, on the day of his release from jail, Danshichi determines to return the favor to Hyōdayū by serving his son Isonojō.
Just after that, Danshichi saves Isonojō’s lover Kotoura being assaulted by an evil warrior. Then all of a sudden, Tokubē, a henchman of the warrior, pounces on Danshichi. It turns out, however, that they both are indebted to the Tamashima family. Thus, the two become sworn brothers, pledging to support Isonojō together.
Meanwhile, loyal and compassionate Sabu gives shelter to the runaway couple Isonojō and Kotoura. On the day of the Kōzugū Shrine festival, Danshichi’s father-in-law Giheiji suddenly appears and then takes Kotoura away, saying that he was asked to do so by Danshichi. Actually, Giheiji was plotting to gain money by handing over Kotoura to the evil warrior. Learning of this plot, Danshichi manages to catch up with Giheiji. However…
Against the backdrop of the Kōzugū Shrine Grand Festival, a summer tradition handed down through the ages in Osaka, this piece represents the spirit of the area’s ordinary citizens. In the scene “Sumiyoshi Toriimae” in which released prisoner Danshichi transforms into a good-looking man, his energetic and dashing tatehiki with Tokubē always amazes the audience. The following “Sabu Uchi” scene depicts the strong-minded yet generous woman Otatsu, Tokubē’s wife, in an impressive manner.
As the festival music moves to a faster beat, the tension onstage suddenly runs high when Danshichi runs after Giheiji, who has Kotoura with him. Finally, in “Nagamachiura” the scene of murder is depicted in the beautiful style that is specific to Kabuki, and the scene closes with people getting carried away during the festival.
