2026 The National Noh Theatre Introductory Exhibition (Sat.May.30-Sat.Aug.22)
【Exhibition】 2026 The National Noh Theatre Introductory Exhibition
All noh performances are classified according to factors, such as the theme and characters, into the following five categories: shobanme mono (First Category Play, waki-noh), nibanme mono (Second Category Play, shura mono), sanbanme mono (Third Category Play, kazura mono), yobanme mono (Fourth Category Play, zatsu mono), and gobanme mono (Fifth Category Play, Kiri Noh).
This exhibition, titled A Guide to Nohgaku, is being held as a project to introduce and explain the costumes—including the dresses, masks, and props—of noh and kyogen characters, along with the structure of the noh stage and the musical instruments played by the hayashi musicians.
We hope to make you feel the appeal of nohgaku, which has been loved by people for 600 years.
