Backstage Tour of the National Theatre and a Viewing of a Kabuki Performance
Backstage Tour of the National Theatre and a Viewing of a Kabuki Performance
A one-day bus tour will take place as the first project in a series under a partnership agreement between the Japan Arts Council and H.I.S. Co., Ltd.
The National Theatre was established in 1966 with the mission of promoting and preserving traditional Japanese performing arts, including Kabuki, Bunraku, Buyo (traditional Japanese dance), Hogaku (traditional Japanese music), and Gagaku (Japanese court music).
Over the years, it has served as a central venue for various performances to familiarize audiences with these traditional arts and train future generations to continue these traditions. However, due to the aging of the facility and to ensure accessibility for all, the decision has been made to rebuild the Theatre. As a result, it closed at the end of October 2023.
This tour offers a unique opportunity to explore the backstage areas of the National Theatre, which is currently closed to the public. Participants will visit spaces that are rarely accessible, including the stage facilities and dressing rooms. Furthermore, you will have the chance to watch part of a Kabuki performance scheduled for January 2025 at the New National Theatre in Tokyo.
As a special highlight, the backstage Tour includes a costume worn by the actors in the actual Kabuki performance, which you can try on and pose for photos in front of the stage backdrop. This Tour is highly recommended for those experiencing traditional performing arts for the first time, so be sure to take advantage of this opportunity to apply!
