The National Theatre’s Ryukyuan performance has frequently featured programs of Kumiodori or Ryukyuan dance; however, the Okinawa Shibai (Okinawan Plays) have not been performed for some time.
Okinawa Shibai is a popular type of drama using the Okinawa dialect, and it is roughly divided into two categories: Kageki (opera) and dialect-spoken plays. Kageki comprises songs, lines, acting, dancing, etc., many of which are themed on ordinary people’s lives or love stories. Meanwhile, dialect-spoken plays, which adapts Kabuki or dramas brought over by Okinawan actors from mainland Japan, is performed with lines close to the Ryukyu dialects in combination with old Okinawan drama. Most of these are period plays based on historical dramas or legends dealing with historical facts. However, new adaptations of dramas appropriate for the present day are also frequently performed in Okinawa.
Okinawa Shibai gained overwhelming popularity among Okinawans before and after the war, on a stage full of Okinawan atmosphere and culture that are rarely seen today. National Theatre Okinawa represents Okinawa Shibai every year, also hosting the Okinawa Shibai Appreciation Class. These programs have enjoyed an ever-growing popularity among our audiences, and are also supported by many of Japan’s talented actors who have been able to continue developing their skills.
