National Theatre (Small Theatre)
The World of Suodori
(Traditional Japanese Dance Without Adornment)
- Learn About the Techniques of Traditional Japanese Dance -
The dancers wear a montsuki (simple kimono with a family crest) against the backdrop of a byōbu (folding screen), and use only a sensu (folding fan) as a hand prop – Suodori is a form of Japanese traditional dance in which the aesthetics are condensed in the unornamented dance form. It is said that, among all of the Japanese dance forms, Suodori maximizes the essential charm of traditional dance – the postures and movements, the artistry of the various positions of the dancers.
The National Theatre has been introducing audiences to the pleasures of Suodori dance through the years with the “Suodori no Kai” performance series, which started in 1991. After a hiatus of three years, we are resuming this popular Suodori program, starting with a new title: the World of Suodori.
