Japanese poetry has evolved as a form of literature to be read aloud. Also described as koewaza, meaning “skill of the voice,” poetry is closely related to the music and performing arts, and conveys its essential charm through the singing and playing of music. In this performance, the characteristics of Japanese poetry focus on classical and contemporary music. The performance styles of Japanese classical music include imayō (a popular style of song from the Heian period), shirabyōshi (female performers singing and dancing to imayō) and ranbyōshi (a type of Noh dance with an erratic rhythm). Contemporary music includes the works created with the theme of renga (a linked verse style). Please savor the rich world of Japanese poetry and the stylistic appeal of this performance.
