May 2022  Gagaku Performance

Bugaku was brought to perfection in the Heian Period – when court culture was at its height – by the process of creating Japanese arrangements to performing arts introduced from the Continent. Since then, it has been performed for more than 1,000 years in Japan, mainly within the Imperial Court and by the Music Department of the Board of Ceremonies of the Imperial Household Agency as its representative successor and designated the Important Intangible Cultural Asset holder for Gagaku. This performance is being presented by them for the first time in about four years and presents two select dancing styles: the elegant hiramai (regular dancing) and dynamic hashirimai (running-style dancing). You’re sure to enjoy this array of masterpieces rich in diversity!
