March 2020 Kabuki Performance "Yoshitsune Senbon Zakura" Streaming Video Available for Free!

The National Theatre is offering the special streaming videos of the March 2020 Kabuki Performance “Yoshitsune Senbon Zakura,” which was filmed without an audience, available free of charge through the National Theatre’s official YouTube channel until April 30, 2020.

This performance was scheduled to present Acts II, III, and IV, the main scenes of the original piece, divided into three programs: Program A (In front of the gate of the Fushimi Inari shrine / The Tokaiya Boathouse / Daimotsu Bay); Program B (Shimoichi Village: The Horse Chestnut Tree / A Bamboo Forest and the Death of Kokingo / The Tsurube Sushiya); and Program C (Michiyuki Travel Scene,"Traveling with the Hatsune Drum in the Mountains of Yoshino" / The Mansion of Kawatsura Hōgen). You can enjoy each of these programs individually online.

Program A depicts the flight of Minamoto no Yoshitsune from the capital; the lively action of the fox Genkurō disguised as Satō Tadanobu, a retainer of Yoshitsune; and the movements of Taira no Tomomori, a warlord who seeks revenge against Yoshitsune.

Program B is themed on the thrilling human drama unfolding on a vagabond, Igami no Gonta, and his family over the Taira clan’s commander, Taira no Koremori, and his family.

Program C portrays Shizuka Gozen and Satō Tadanobu (the fox Genkurō in reality) traveling around Mountains of Yoshino, where the cherry blossoms are in full bloom. The piece also portrays the affection of the fox Genkurō yearning for his parents, thus revealing the secret behind a drum called “Hatsune no tsuzumi.”
